How to Make Elastin

Elastin, a protein found in our organs, artery walls and skin, naturally breaks down over time, causing our organs, connective tissues and skin to become less resilient and youthful. The body stops producing new elastin in our early teens, and it is difficult to stimulate elastin production once the body has stopped making it. However, there are several simple ways to protect the elastin you already have from breaking down, or even restore your body's existing elastin, which will combat signs of aging like sagging skin and wrinkles.

Things You'll Need

  • Water
  • Supplements
  • Sunscreen

Avoid environmental stressors. One of the best ways to prevent your elastin from breaking down too quickly is to stay away from environmental stressors such as sunlight, smog and smoke that cause wear and tear on your elastin. Make sure to avoid direct sunlight and always wear a high-quality, full-spectrum sunscreen. If you smoke, quit as soon as possible.

Eat antioxidant-rich foods. Protect your youth from the inside out by eating dark berries, broccoli, oranges and grapefruit. The antioxidants in these foods will defend your body from free radicals, which cause elastin to break down. You should also eat foods high in omega 3 and omega 6 fats, such as salmon, nuts, avocados and olive oil.

Take elastin and collagen-boosting supplements. Sometimes its difficult to get all of the essential oils and vitamins your body needs through diet alone. Some of the best supplements for restoring your elastin are zinc, vitamin C and hyaluronic acid, which locks moisture between your skin cells, keeping your elastin from dehydrating.

Drink plenty of water. Elastin breaks down faster when dehydrated. Staying hydrated also cushions your skin and organs, protecting them from damage, and enables your body to quickly flush out toxins that age your elastin.
    • 5
Exercise daily. Regular, moderate exercise increases your heart rate and circulation, causing your whole body to function more efficiently and to rid itself of toxins more quickly. Exercise also reduces stress, which causes elastin to deteriorate.
    • 6
Apply elastin-boosting lotions. While a healthy diet and exercise are the most effective ways to protect your elastin, sometimes you need a little help from the outside. Any lotion that hydrates well will improve the look of your skin and help maintain your existing elastin. The best lotions for restoring your skin's elastin, though, contain vitamin C, vitamin A and zinc. For best results, consult a dermatologist about a prescription-strength vitamin C or retinoid cream.
